I Hate Waiting
By: Pastor Todd Crofford
I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.
-Psalm 27:13-14 NIV
In an iconic moment of The Princess Bride, Inigo Montoya is told he will need to be patient, and he mutters under his breath, “I hate waiting.” So often I have wanted to bark back at the screen, “Me too Inigo, me too!” I bet Inigo and I aren’t the only ones!
Today’s verse dips twice into the word wait. If you read all the verses leading up to it you can see trouble has been surrounding David for a while-waiting is no party for him. Yet he declares he is still confident good things from God are ahead, even as he waits. And so he reminds himself that waiting is itself a form of exerting strength.
Trusting God for his timing for a new job is not passive procrastination, it’s strength. Believing him that better days are ahead is not wishful thinking, it’s strength. Finding joy amidst current sorrow is not futility, it’s faith. Maybe tomorrow, maybe next year, maybe in eternity- God’s goodness and his perfect plan will be revealed. Until then we are going to have to wait- we get to choose how.
I’m pretty sure I will never love waiting, but I choose to love him while I am waiting.
