Lord, help me see…
By: Pastor Chrissy Cooney
We have two dogs, Lilo and Bear, who provide both comic relief and scripture demonstrations on a regular basis. Bear is a 90 lb. German Shephard/Labrador mix, who is (much to my distress) still learning manners. Lilo is our sweet (we won’t mention her weight) Labrador/Husky/Australian Shepherd mix, and she knows exactly how to be a good girl.
When she wants to be close to me, Lilo will lay at my feet and look up at me with loving, pleading eyes. When Bear desires affection, he climbs on top of me and tries to lay his neck across my own.
One of them gets invited to my lap more frequently than the other - can you guess which one?
As I read Jesus’ parable of the wedding feast and the seats of honor this morning, I couldn’t help but think about our two furry companions. Bear clearly believes the seat of honor (my lap) belongs to him and tries to take it routinely. Lilo waits to be invited and consequently, gets to rest in favored positions much more often.
What a simple lesson we can learn from these two! Jesus said, “For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” (Luke, 14:11 NLT, p. 38 in Messiah).
My two dogs don’t understand humility, but they are demonstrating the principle, nonetheless. And they have me asking –
Where am I feeling smart and knowledgeable?
Where am I feeling righteous?
Where am I feeling deserving?
Where am I letting my ego lead?
Lord, help me to see these places in my life and have the humility to learn, to see my own faults, and to put others first.
Lord, help me see…
