The Gift You Can’t Afford to Refuse
By: Pastor Steven Covington
Mark 2:27
27 Then Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath.
Several years ago, Tori and I decided to practice the Sabbath. To rest from all paid and unpaid work for a literal 24-hour day every week. At first, we were terrible at it (sometimes we still are!) – but it has gotten much easier with practice.
On the Sabbath, we devote an entire day to delight in God. We enjoy the good things he’s given to us. We neglect the dishes and take long naps instead. We spend time with our kids. We eat good food. We play games. We read. We go for walks. We sing and dance in the living room. We laugh a lot. We trust that God can run the world without us for a day.
Most of the time, when I share our Sabbath experience with folks, their knee-jerk reaction is, “Wow, that sounds great, but I just don’t have the time!” And as understandable as that feeling is, I feel the need to press back against it…
Love takes time, and time is the only thing hurried people don’t have. What if for just one day a week, we stopped asking God to hurry up, and we accepted his invitation to slow down? The Sabbath is nothing less than taking the time to love and be loved by God - a gift of God that you can’t afford to refuse.
