Great Boldness
By: Pastor Chrissy Cooney
I was listening to an interview with Compassion International’s CEO Jimmy Mellado recently. He was describing a time in the organization’s past when a consultant recommended that they focus more on the “compassion” aspect of their brand and less on Jesus – because there are lots of kind and caring people out there who would give to the work they were doing if Jesus wasn’t such a big part of it.
Mellado described that the leader at the time decided to go in the opposite direction. He told the team they were going to “double down on Jesus” and they even changed their mission statement to reflect that decision (releasing children from poverty in Jesus’ name). The result was growth in every area.
In today’s scripture reading, we see the believers do exactly the same thing. They are thrown in jail and then threatened and told to never again speak or teach in Jesus’ name.
How do they respond?
Acts 4:28-29 tells us that they prayed, “And now, O Lord, hear their threats, and give us, your servants, great boldness in preaching your word. Stretch out your hand with healing power; may miraculous signs and wonders be done through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” (Messiah, p.67)
They doubled down on Jesus! They asked for Great Boldness to preach His Word! They asked the Lord to do miraculous signs and wonders in their midst. And HE DID!
What if every time the enemy told us to be quiet about our faith we asked God to make us bold?
What if we asked Him to give us Great Boldness to share our testimony, to pray for strangers, to talk to someone about Jesus?
Lord, please give me Great Boldness to share Your Love and Truth!
