Weird Stuff

Weird Stuff
By: Pastor Todd Crofford

This letter is from Jude, a slave of Jesus Christ and a brother of James.
Jude, NLT

Few books in the New Testament have as much “weird stuff” as Jude.  He comments on angels in dungeons, exposes conversations between Michael the archangel and the devil, and mentions the mysterious Old Testament character Enoch.  While unpacking some of these might be fun, what captures me in this very short book is how it begins.

It is almost certain that Jude is Jesus’ younger brother. Yet he introduces himself as a slave to Jesus and a brother to James (another of Jesus’ brothers.) I bet if he had a director of PR, they would have told him to pull a little more rank than this by referring to himself as Jesus’ brother.

This is so refreshing in an age where we count followers, are impressed by rock star status preachers and are always looking for who is going viral. Instead, Jude chose the route of humility.

Let me remind you today that God is not impressed by the kind of things we are. Humility is more impressive to God than fame. So I challenge you today, as I challenge myself, to pursue humility.  Let’s care less about how many people know our name or find us impressive and a whole lot more about how we can faithfully serve Jesus - even viewing ourselves as his slaves.
