A Fuzzy Perspective
By Nicole Goddard

Then spitting on the man’s eyes, he laid his hands on him and asked, “Can you see anything now?” The man looked around. “Yes,” he said, “I see people, but I can’t see them very clearly. They look like trees walking around.” Then Jesus placed his hands on the man’s eyes again, and his eyes were opened. His sight was completely restored, and he could see everything clearly. Mark 8:23-25 (Messiah pg. 274).

Did anyone else catch that two-part miracle in today’s passage? Was Jesus testing the blind man? Surely, he couldn’t have made a mistake on the first healing attempt. With most of Jesus’ miracles happening at his spoken words or the laying of his hands, this one is quite involved with spitting on eyes, partial healings… What gives?

There is so much commentary available on this, but an interesting thought to consider is that the blind man must not have been blind his whole life to understand what trees and people look like, enough to know he wasn’t seeing 20/20. He knew what to expect - knew what clear vision was.

That leads me to ponder the times I knew enough to trust God’s hand in my life, but I couldn’t see the clear evidence. I knew of his provision and grace before me but couldn’t grasp the fullness of his blessings. At times I was mid-miracle, and just needed a little more spiritual development to truly SEE IT.

I know what our God is capable of, and yet I can be a little too nearsighted to see his long game. If you’re anything like me, let’s ask God to restore our eyesight again!
