Home Sweet Home
By: Pastor Steven Covington

John 14:23
Jesus answered, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.”

I love my recliner. It’s my favorite place to take a nap, read a book, or watch baseball. It’s also the place I almost instinctively find myself at the end of a long day when I’m feeling exhausted or overwhelmed. My chair is the place I most frequently go to when I seek the Lord in prayer and in his word. I learned that from my Pawpaw.
When I was a kid, I spent many weekends at my Pawpaw’s house. Every morning, I’d find him in the same place: in the den, feet propped up in the recliner, with an open Bible resting on his lap. He’d flash me a smile, wave me over, and pull me up to sit with him. I couldn’t begin to count the hours we spent sitting in that oversized chair together. He told me Bible stories, and funny stories, and stories of how he’d seen Jesus answer his prayers. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I believe that chair was holy.
When you think of a place that is sacred, perhaps an armchair isn’t the first thing your mind jumps to. It feels too simple… ordinary… mundane. But so do all the other things that make a place feel like home. John 14:23 tells us that if we love Jesus and keep his word, then God himself will come and make his home with us. Do you hear the warmth in that promise? God sets up a sanctuary within our very hearts, and anywhere we go becomes holy ground as we bring the love of Christ into it. How would your life change if God came and made his home with you?
