Leading through Serving

Friday, March 6th
Lead by Serving
By: Pastor Adam Munshaw

Mr. Tony and Ms. Lisa moved in next door. The 26’ moving truck pulled into the cul-de-sac and I knew what was coming next - moving heavy furniture. Two retired bus drivers, I knew Mr. Tony and Ms. Lisa should not deal with all of that alone, but it’s a Sunday - and I’m tired from leading services all morning.

Matthew 10:43-45 NLT says, “But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

The world often defines leadership by position, platform, or power. Titles matter. Visibility matters. Influence matters. The disciples are even guilty in this passage of asking Jesus who will sit on the right or the left of him in the coming Kingdom. But Jesus says, “Among you it will be different.”

Jesus does not rebuke the desire to lead. Instead, if you want to lead, serve. Jesus set the example for us, “for even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others…”
I know long before I invite Mr. Tony and Ms. Lisa to church - I should start by installing their washer and dryer.

In every area of our lives, the question becomes: Am I using what God has given me to elevate myself or to serve others?

Jesus invites us into a “different” way where first place looks like last place and where authority flows from sacrifice. I want to invite you to ask the Holy Spirit this week to show you those places where God wants to use you to follow in the way of Jesus and lead by serving.
