Increasing Capacity
By: Pastor Todd Crofford
At last Jesus stood up again and returned to the disciples, only to find them asleep, exhausted from grief. "Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation."
-Luke 22 NLT
Prayer can serve multiple very important roles in our lives. Through prayer we can draw closer to God, hear his voice and direction and make needs known. This text shows us another thing prayer can do. Prayer can help us power up with strength to face the temptations that the future will bring.
There is the garden Jesus would face temptation to bail on the plan of salvation and the disciples would face the temptation to bail on Jesus. Jesus prayed and prevailed, the disciples slept and failed. When we go to the Lord in prayer, we can build up strength that will carry us through things we do not yet even see.
I have seen video games where the player comes across some gem or box that adds to their health status. Later on, when they are getting beaten up, the strength they gathered in advance will make all the difference between life and death.
Sometimes a session of prayer may lack feeling God or any “lightning strike” moments. But whenever we spend time with God, we are increasing our capacity to hear his voice, do his will, and overcome what the enemy tries to throw at us.
