Not a Moment of Hesitation
By: Nicole Goddard
Wow, what a jam packed reading today! Jesus is all over the place healing people, overloading boats with fish, naming disciples and getting the Pharisees all riled up. There is no shortage of things to write about here, but one thing really jumped out at me.
In a brief paragraph, Luke described Jesus’ healing of Simon’s mother in law who was bedridden with a very high fever. The situation seemed to have been fairly dire, as everyone begged for Jesus to heal her. And Jesus being the awesome guy he is, stood by her bedside and rebuked the fever out of her body.
Here’s the kicker:
…And she got up at once and prepared a meal for them. Luke 4:39
No frills, no taking to the streets exclaiming her healing. She could’ve taken a few minutes to process what happened, or ask Jesus why he healed her. In today’s world, one could call their friends and family, go Live on Facebook or create a viral Instagram reel exclaiming what Jesus had done.
But not this gal. Her next move was to spring into service and fill the need before her – feeding Jesus and his followers.
Luke, being the meticulous physician he was, included this for a reason. But what is it?
As I read the passage over, I’m just so compelled by the mother in law’s immediate call to action. She didn’t wait for the right ministry to try, for extra resources to be available, for a different day, week or season in her life. She recognized God’s grace over her and with a heart full of gratitude and service, she jumped right in.
Friend, if you’ve felt the grace of God, it's time to jump all in!
