The Opportunist
By Nicole Goddard
One of the great paradoxes of time is that looking two years into the future can feel so far away, while the last two years of your past seemed to occur in a matter of weeks. Its well described by the phrase, the days are long, but the years are short.
That must be what Paul felt in the drawn out saga of his imprisonment. He spent two years in prison under governor Felix just to be passed on to governor Festus. When neither would accept his defense, he appealed to Caesar requiring a trip to Rome. His passage to Rome was lengthened by storms and shipwrecks, followed by another two year house arrest in Rome awaiting further trial.
I’ll bet Paul’s days felt long, but he was the ultimate opportunist.
Whether to angered Jewish council or to fearful shipmen, Paul used every bit of his trials to spread the Gospel and to write his letters that we know and study today. In his two years of waiting in Rome,
He welcomed all who visited him, boldly proclaiming the Kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ. Acts 28:30-31 (Messiah pg. 110)
Maybe you find yourself in a drawn out season, where the end of it feels out of reach. The conditions aren’t ideal or you feel limited by your blocked out schedule. If this is relatable to you, rest assured that you are not alone.
May we learn a Christian likes hack from Paul - and that is to seize the opportunities right in front of you! Don’t wait for the right time. Ask that friend to grab coffee, share the gospel at bedtime with your kids, pray for an opportunity to share with that difficult coworker. Don’t let the trials of life thwart your purpose!
