Two Wrongs Don’t Make a Right
By: Pastor Chrissy Cooney
When I was about 8, I shared an attic bedroom with my two teenage sisters. My bed was on one side of the room, and the light switch was on the other side – and I was afraid of the dark. One night, as I was settling into bed and my sister was leaving the room, I begged her not to turn off the light. “Please don’t turn off the light, don’t turn off the light, don’t turn…”
The room went dark as she walked out.
I jumped out of bed, ran across the room and down the stairs to the light switch, flipped it back on, flew out the door, ran to where my sister was standing, and KICKED HER.
I don’t know that I’ve ever kicked anyone out of anger before that or after, but that night, in front of God, my mom, and anyone else who was in the living room, I kicked Kathleen.
And I was in TROUBLE.
But I was justified, right? She turned that light off BECAUSE she knew I didn’t want to be in the dark. She was wrong!
The painful lesson I learned that night was that two wrongs don’t make a right.
Paul writes about this in Romans, “Never pay back evil with more evil. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honorable. Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone.” (Romans 12:17-18 NLT, p. 197 in Messiah)
Brothers and sisters in Christ, we have an enemy who prowls around looking to stir up anger, distractions, and division. Let’s be peace makers who refuse to live or act in less than honorable ways. Let’s refuse to strike out in anger. Let’s live in a way that pleases Jesus.
