Comparison is a Thief
By Nicole Goddard
I was one of those little girls that was in love with horses. By the time I was 12, I had proven my passion would not fade and my parents bought me my very own horse. Nearly every day I would get off the bus and run straight to our barn to see him. I would spend hours grooming, riding and caring for him. I was so content just to be with him and more than satisfied with our simple routine of riding around the farm.
One summer, I decided to enter a local horse show. Early into the day, I noticed that my tack wasn’t as fancy as the other riders and my horse and I didn’t ride the courses very well. I can vividly remember that day when comparison came in to steal the joy and pride I had in my horse.
We all have a story like this one – when something we loved became tarnished by feelings of inadequacy. One can even compare their Christian walk to another’s. Paul tells us how to combat this:
Pay attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else. Galatians 6:4 (Messiah pg. 174)
Paul urges us to maintain our focus on our own walk with the Lord by conducting our own self-examinations and embracing the path he has set us on. As you lean in close and abide in him, you’ll find fulfillment in the Lord and the kind of confident satisfaction that leaves no room for the comparison game.
