For What Is True
By: Pastor Todd Crofford
Hold on to the pattern of wholesome teaching you learned from me- a pattern shaped by the faith and love that you have in Christ Jesus.
-2 Timothy 1, NLT
I remember watching the sit-com Bewitched when I was a child. Though the name sounds questionable, it really was a simple, even silly show. One character I never forgot is Larry Tate. Larry was the boss of an advertising firm that was constantly seeking to please its clients. As a result, Larry would change his opinion constantly to reflect whatever the client of the day believed. He had no deeply held beliefs and no scruples to stand for anything. His finger was to the wind, and his mind was never made up. He was so pathetic.
Paul’s second letter to Timothy is believed to be his last writing before he is martyred. I am struck by how often Paul encourages Timothy to securely hold onto the truth, especially when the heat is on. Paul insists that Timothy be the opposite of Larry Tate, holding tightly to what he knows is true. Paul has every right to challenge Timothy to this, because he knows he himself will soon die for his beliefs. Many of Paul’s friends have abandoned him when the going got tough, but Paul stood firm.
How about you? Are you willing to stand up for what you know is true, even if it costs you popularity, money, or friendships? The modern church is full of fair-weather-friends, only willing to follow the truth when it is convenient or popular. The Holy Spirit is challenging us to be like Paul and Timothy - willing to die for - and live by - the truth.
