Faithful and Just
By: Pastor Chrissy Cooney
Years ago, while learning to teach children Bible lessons, I learned this definition of sin: “Sin is anything you think (point to your brain), say (touch your mouth), or do (make hand motions like you are working) that is against God’s commands.”
This is such a simple definition, and yet it holds such deep meaning. Am I allowing my thoughts to dwell on anything that is not in line with God’s Word? Sin. Do I let words come out of my mouth that are not loving toward Him or others? Sin. Is there something that I am doing that is against His commands? Sin.
When we realize how simple the definition of sin is, we also realize how prevalent sin is in our own lives. But our loving God never leaves us in that place of despair. In fact, He has already solved the sin issue (on the cross), and He is just waiting on us to bring our shortcomings and lay them at His feet. 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
He is righteous and faithful, and He does the purifying! That’s who He is. When we turn away from our sins and bring them to the feet of Jesus, confessing them to Him and asking for His forgiveness and help, He will forgive us and cleanse us.
Whatever it is that you are battling – whatever thoughts, words, or actions you are struggling to overcome – there is nothing too big for God. You won’t shock or surprise Him. He won’t gasp in horror and send you away. The One who is faithful and just is waiting with open arms to forgive you and make you clean.
