Gold Coins in the Attic
By: Pastor Chrissy Cooney
Shortly after the housing market crash of 2008, we moved and ended up maintaining two houses, in two states, on one salary. We were struggling to make ends meet, “robbing Peter to pay Paul” just to keep the electricity on at both homes. One week, all the bills converged at once and we found ourselves in a bad place.
As we looked at the bills, we knew our only answer was prayer.
We understood that God was our Provider and that we could turn to Him with every need. As Philippians 4:6 says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”
We had been tithers for a few years at this point, and we prayed something like this, “Lord, we haven’t always been perfect with our money, but we have tried to honor You with what you’ve given us. Please forgive us for when we’ve fallen short. Right now, we need help. Please show us what we have – what You’ve given us – that can help us with this situation.”
Friend, I kid you not, almost immediately one of us said to the other, “I wonder if those collector’s coins Uncle J gave us are worth anything? I wonder if we can even find them?”
We had been given two “collector’s coins” shortly after we were married, and they had moved all over the country with us for over a decade. Minutes later we were in the attic, with a box open and the coins in our hands. They were solid gold coins, and by the end of the week every bill was paid.
Oh, how we praised God for hearing, answering, and providing for us!
