The Benefits of a Generous Life
By: Pastor Chrissy Cooney
Want to put a smile on your face and keep a spring in your step? You can do this by making a practice out of living a generous life. This is both a Biblical principle and a scientific fact.
JOY is spelled:
J – Jesus
O – Others
Y – You
When you put Jesus first, Others next, and Yourself last with all of your resources - your finances, your emotions, and your time, you will live a joy filled life.
There is science behind this too. When we give to others - dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin are released in our brain. These are commonly called “happiness hormones” because these chemicals improve our mood, they help us feel close to others, and they reduce stress levels. These chemicals in your brain are proven to help you sleep better, get more done, have better social interactions, and even have better memory!
The Biblical concept that we find behind this science is found in Proverbs 11:25 (NLT) “The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.”
When we live generously, we are trusting that God will supply all that we need and we are putting others needs before our own. In doing this, we prosper emotionally, physically, and spiritually. The truth is that generosity towards others improves every area of our life.
Want to create a habit of generosity in your own life? You can do it today by starting with something small; tip your server more than the usual amount, set a goal to encourage or compliment one person every day this week, commit yourself to serving regularly in a ministry at church, or increase your charitable giving to help someone who has less than you do.
