One Uppers
Pastor Chris Wood
Being a parent brings forth many blessings and rewards. However, there is one aspect of being a parent that I still don’t understand fully. This is the one uppers.
For example, Let’s say I mentioned to a group of parents that my daughter did a fantastic job doing a paint-by-number. Another parent could possibly speak up and say, let me tell you what my child has done! They have completely restored a painting that was done originally by Michelangelo.
Another parent could speak up and say their child had recently sold their painting for 3.4 million dollars on eBay. This round of one-uppers can go back and forth with the possibility of no end in sight. Funny as this may be, we also see this within the Last Supper. In Luke 22 we read the following…
24 A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. 25 Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves?
May we as people of God be able to rejoice with those who rejoice and encourage those who share their victories. My hope is that all of us can walk around with “blessing glasses” so we can see people with the eyes that Jesus sees them with. Deeply loved and chosen, and their life story matters.
