Faithful Sacrifice Averting Destruction
By: Anna Williams
The Israelites were an enslaved population forced to perform hard labor. Their captors had even engaged in genocidal acts to limit their numbers. (Exodus 1:22)
Despite all the miraculous signs and wonders displayed, Pharoah hardened his heart towards God and refused to free them. This arrogance and pride led to the destruction of countless Egyptians.
“For I [the Lord] will pass through the land of Egypt on this night, and will strike down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and animal; against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments [exhibiting their worthlessness]. I am the Lord.”
“The blood shall be a sign for you on [the doorposts of] the houses where you live; when I see the blood I shall pass over you, and no affliction shall happen to you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.” – Exodus 12:12-13 AMP
Stop for a moment and think about the repercussions of sudden death of the eldest males in an ancient culture. This was a catastrophic loss of the primary heir in EVERY single household in the ENTIRE nation.
But amidst his plans of wrath for the wicked, God also made a way to shield anyone who loved and believed in Him. He made a way for his people to cover themselves in an act of faith and sacrifice that would avert their destruction.
Jesus later completed this work on a universal level with his sacrifice on the cross for our sins. He became the final Passover Lamb that would redeem us once and for all.
What destruction has God rescued you from that you can be grateful for today?
