Mountain Sized Faith
By: Anna Williams
Living a life of caregiving for someone with a chronic, severely crippling disease does things to your understanding of prayer. I cannot tell you how many times I have begged God for my daughter’s healing. There have been times when my prayers were answered with no, sometimes wait and other times miraculous improvements.
“Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. “Truly[a] I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. - Mark 11:22-24 NIV
In my life, the biggest mountain has been my focus on the seen things and an overwhelming feeling of how could God possibly accomplish good out of this?! But our Father is so patient and loving. He is teaching me to pause and look around the mountain. To focus my prayers not so much on the immediate needs but on my heart’s response.
My prayer has become “Lord, help my unbelief. Help me see your work in the people around us as we move through this life. Give me a heart for them. Use me in the midst of this. Help my daughter understand the plans you have for her and how she can use her pain to bring others to you”. Those kinds of prayers combined with God’s awesome power, can not only move mountains but change the landscape around us for generations.
What is the mountain standing in your way and how can you face it with a new perspective? Holy Spirit, help us have ears to hear, eyes to see and hearts open to your work.
