Sit At His Feet
By: Pastor Melissa
Luke 10:38-42
The busy of Christmas can at times come in like a rushing wind. Before we know it we are going to all the parties, Christmas cookie baking, decorating the house, seeing the lights, going to the shows, shopping, and “poof” it’s December 25th and find ourselves saying “I can’t believe it’s already Christmas day”. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE Christmas! I love everything about it, yes, even the silly commercialized traditions that come with this season. But if I am not careful, I too, can look like Martha this time of year.
Martha loved Jesus. She wanted to make her home just right for Him. Martha’s heart was in the right place. Yet, it was her sister Mary that seemed to get what Jesus was really looking for. “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” In all her busyness, Martha missed what was standing right in front of her. She was upset when all the things weren’t finished and even to the point of telling Jesus (the one whom she was trying to please) to make Mary help her.
Jesus’ answer to Martha was simple, “few things are needed-or indeed only one”. In this season when busy seems to be marked also with hurrying from one thing to the next, would Jesus tell you the same. Few things are needed, sure they are good things and create many memories, but are we indeed sitting and resting at the feet of Jesus during this season? Our walls, even our words say, “Jesus is the reason for the season”, but is He? Do we make Him the focus by sitting with Him or do we tend to look a little more like Martha around the holidays? Doing all the right things with the right heart, but still missing the presence of the One who is among us.
Find moments to sit at His feet this season in the middle of the busyness around you. Soak up His presence and truly reflect on the One thing, that is the reason for the season-Jesus.
