The Unlikeliest Hero
By: Anna Williams
Have you ever wondered at the main characters of the Christmas story? A young girl from the small, backwater town of Nazareth; a young guy trying to provide for her amidst the whispers and rumors; and the lowly shepherds who got stuck with the night shift. The Incarnation of Christ began in such an unlikely way.
C.S. Lewis wrote: “Reality, in fact, is usually something you could not have guessed. That is one of the reasons I believe in Christianity. It is a religion you could not have guessed. If it offered us just the kind of universe we had always expected, I should feel we were making it up.”
Although I am less than the least of all the Lord’s people, this grace was given me:
to preach to the Gentiles the boundless riches of Christ, and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God,
who created all things. – Ephesians 3:8-9 NIV
The birth, life, death and certainly resurrection of Christ were all so incredibly counter-cultural. They were unexpected, unconventional, and unimaginable. Inside this truth lies a wonderful opportunity to believers like you and me – that when we lay down our strivings and surrender our lives to God; He can use us to accomplish amazing things.
Paul (the Murderer turned Missionary) was an excellent example of this. Your past sins and failings have no bearing on your future potential. God delights in using the weak to confound the strong. For it is in our weakness that others can see God working through us.
Has the Holy Spirit been speaking to you about how to serve now that you have surrendered your life to Jesus? Don’t let your past failings or current inexperience stop you from stepping out in faith. Seek the Father’s Will and follow in obedience. You never know, he may be calling you to become an unlikely hero.
