Take Heart!
By: Pastor Todd
"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
-John 16:33 NIV
I try to picture in my mind the way Jesus would say things to his disciples. At times was it slow methodical speech, and others as rapid fire as your text thread with too many friends?
In this instance, I picture a gap. He tells them they are going to have trouble AND they should take heart. Long pause for their confusion to set in. And then… I have overcome the world.
Here is what Jesus told the disciples. Judas is coming by; you’re gonna fly; I’m gonna die; you’re gonna cry; THEN I’m gonna rise. That should bring them peace? For Jesus, you can stack up all those four bad things but they are seriously outweighed by the one great good- his resurrection. It brings hope and peace no matter what the trouble.
In fact, you can stack a thousand problems until they are the size of a mountain. But deep inside, at the very foundation of our being, we must dwell in the knowledge that we serve a God who rose victorious over even death and sin. That is a game changer. We are in strong hands.
Daily our minds want to go to the wrong question. We get in the habit of asking “How big is our problem?” In reality the question is “How big is our God?”
