Godly Counsel
Monday, Aug. 14
The heartfelt counsel of a friend is as sweet as perfume and incense. -Proverbs 27:9
How are you with taking advice? Do you hear the words of those who love you as criticism or loving?
In the days of King Solomon, honored visitors and valuable guests were often anointed with a sweet-smelling fragrance by their host on their head or feet. Not only was this done as a sign of respect for their visitors, but it also helped to lift their spirits and set a tone. Solomon in this passage, compares the sensible advice of a valued friend and the energizing influence of oil and incense placed on those in your life.
Solomon says that Godly counsel from a trusted friend is sweet. In life, we don’t always know the right answer. Sometimes our emotions go before our holiness. Other times our desire to jump supersedes our desire to wait on God. In those moments, Holy Spirit often uses those closest to us to guide and redirect us unto the Lord.
Do you have a Godly friend in your life whose words are sweet to your understanding? Even when this person must speak a hard truth, you can easily receive it because you’re overwhelmingly aware how much they love you and are for you? If so, stop and pray this prayer with me over them today.
Holy Spirit, today I thank you for ________. Their words are sweet, and their love is real. I praise You that You made them and placed them into my world so that I may glean from who they are in You. May Your presence be abundantly felt in their life today. I love You and I love them.
In Jesus Name,
Amen
