The Gift of a Person
By: Pastor Todd Crofford
“The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. 37 For nothing is impossible with God."
Luke 1:35-37 NIV
(A quick thanks to my son, Clay, for inspiring these thoughts today.)
OK, here’s a quick Christmas quiz, multiple choice.
When Mary was talking to the angel, she probably felt:
I’m putting my money on D. In the midst of all those emotions and her, “How?” question, the angel gave her two things. The first was a very general explanation that, “The power of the Most High will overshadow you.”
If you understand what that means, send me an email. I doubt she did, either.
The other thing the angel gave her was a person–Elizabeth. In a few months, she would visit Elizabeth and they will have a grand celebration.
More often than not, the greatest gift God gives us in times of confusion or difficulty is not finances, health, or even explanations. He gives us the flesh and blood gift of a person to be right there next to us.
Right now, so close to Christmas and the opening of gifts, take a moment to thank God for the gift of someone specific in your life.
Pray with me. Dear God, sometimes I take people for granted in my life. Forgive me. Today I want to thank you for ____________. You were gracious to give them to me. Now please bless and strengthen them and remind me to thank them in person. In Jesus name I pray.
