This Little Light
By: Melissa Beauvais
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16
One of the most incredible things that happen when you follow Jesus and join a church is that you inherit a family. You begin to form lasting relationships, hang out, vacation, play sports, go to school, and basically "do life" with those you worship with.
This is imperative to our spiritual walk and it’s beautiful. Our church family provides accountability, empowers, provides a sense of belonging, and teaches us. Our light grows brighter when we are around our brothers and sisters in Christ.
Jesus tells us we are the “light of the world” when we come to know Him. We have this light that burns within our souls and are told that we must go out and share the light for the world to see. In all the amazing things that we have around our church family, we can sometimes forget there is a dark and perverse world that needs to be lit.
Nearly all our days we are filled with fellow believers. Think about that for a second and your everyday activities. If we are constantly surrounded by our church family, how are we shining into the darkness of our community? Our lights shine brightest when we are in the dim dark spaces of our every day.
Where are practical ways you can be light? The salon or barber, recreational activities, maybe volunteer at a shelter or a school? Go and be the light; don't hide the lamp once lit but let the world see.
“This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine”. (Harold Dixon Loes, This Little Light of Mine Hymn)
