Peace That Goes Beyond Understanding
By: Lori Ennis

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and supplication with gratitude, make your requests known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will protect your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7

Have you ever heard someone say, “When I get to Heaven, I’ve got a list of questions for God!”

Maybe you’ve even said it yourself.
I sure have. Sometimes in jest; other times in desperation.

Why are there mosquitoes or jellyfish?
Why do people get cancer?
Why do children die before their parents?

It’s intrinsic for us to want to know, “Why?”--that curiosity was what got us in trouble in the Garden of Eden in the first place.

But the truth is, there are just some answers that we’ll never have on this earth. Looking for meaning in a tragedy or uncomfortable circumstance can help us look for silver linings and see how God doesn’t waste pain, sure…but it can also become an obsession that steals our joy because some things are just beyond our understanding.

That’s why Paul shares that there is peace in the wisdom of understanding that sometimes, we just won’t understand.

What we don’t understand makes us anxious, and we go just about everywhere in the world to understand but to The One who knew all before the first breath any of us ever took.

It’s one thing to be unsettled because we don’t know, but if we don’t take that anxiety to Him in prayer and supplication, we’ll never have a peace that goes beyond understanding.

He IS that Peace.
He IS that Understanding.

When you’re feeling unsettled and anxious and like you just wish God would give you the wisdom to get through whatever it is you’re going through–just ask Him. Surrender that He is King. His thoughts are not ours and His ways are not ours, and there is freedom in knowing we don’t always get to know everything.

We don’t have to know everything, though. When we seek Him and His wisdom, He gives us exactly what we need.
