Let’s be real.
By: Pastor Amie Donovan

Earlier this year I attended a ‘women of clergy’ conference with two women I greatly
respect in ministry.

They are amazing mothers, loving wives, and zealous ministers. Not to
mention, way further along in school than I am. I remember looking at them and thinking, “how
do they do it?”

To be honest, in my house I’m just hoping the bread isn’t moldy, today isn’t a
half day I forgot about, and my husband remembers he is picking our oldest up from work.

Despite my instant insecurity, I was so excited to be at this conference.

Some call it work; I call it solitude in community.

This conference had several breakouts you could choose to attend. There was one I
knew I needed most. It was titled, “burn out.”

That’s exactly what I was feeling! My eyes testified to exhaustion; my attitude testified to poor time management, and my sleep testified to a hurried mind full of things I should be doing instead of wasting eight hours lying in bed.

“Lady, tell me your secrets,” I thought to myself as I grabbed my pen and notebook. I’m ready to
learn, Ministry Master.

Her advice?

To rest in the Lord.

“He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul.”Psalm 23:2-3

I left the conference not with a change in my calendar, but with a change in my heart.

In the name of serving Jesus, I forfeited sitting with him absent agenda. While sometimes we need to say no to certain things we’re invited to, other times we need to say yes to an invitation to be in His presence.

It’s there we experience rest.
