Their herdsmen ran away and reported it in the city and in the countryside. And the people came to see what it was that had happened. And then they came to Jesus and saw the man who had been demon-possessed sitting down, clothed and in his right mind, the very man who had previously had the “legion”; and they became frightened. Those who had seen it described to them how it had happened to the demon-possessed man, and all about the pigs. And they began to beg Him to leave their region. And as He was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed was begging Him that he might accompany Him. And He did not let him, but He said to him, “Go home to your people and report to them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He had mercy on you.” And he went away and began to proclaim in Decapolis what great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed.”
There is an interesting parallel between today’s story of the man and about Jesus calming the storm. The disciples were afraid of the storm, but they were terrified when they saw the display of Jesus’ power. In turn, the village people were scared enough of the man in the tombs to keep him out of town, but they were so terrified of Jesus’ power that they asked him to leave the entire region. We all recognize awe-inspiring power and authority when we see it.
In scripture, every time someone gets a better glimpse of God, they experience the bone-jarring revelation of his power and holiness. In the end, God wants you to run to him, not from him, but as you draw in closer during these seven weeks, do so with eyes opening to his greatness. A fresh glimpse of the awesome nature of Jesus will change how you talk about him, how you worship, and how you pray.
Prayer Focus – Pray for the Red Shirt Crew, Hope Café, and Parking Lot Team Leaders and Volunteer's as they help park, greet, and serve everyone in our congregation when we come to worship at Real Life.
