Brave Devotional Series - Week 7 – Reflections - Saturday – Pastor Todd
The Greatness of God
Psalm 113:1-4 (NIV)
Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord, you his servants; praise the name of the Lord. Let the name of the Lord be praised, both now and forevermore. From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the Lord is to be praised. The Lord is exalted over all the nations, his glory above the heavens.
Celebrity is America’s version of Nobility. In their prime, celebrities can make crowds swoon, create traffic jams by merely stopping by a part of town, and ask about any perk imaginable to the rich and famous. If you want to see pandemonium, catch some vintage video of how adoring fanatics (fans) acted around Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Marilyn Monroe, or Michael Jordan. Stories abound of superstars like Tiger Woods or Jackie Gleason who couldn’t go anywhere in public and expect a moment’s peace.
To me, it seems like American Idol was an aptly named show. Entertain us, impress us, wow us with your strength, money, or beauty and we will adore you—even worship you, for a while. Still, at some point, beauty recedes, jump shots start to rattle out, and someone younger or cooler comes onto the scene. Human glory always fades.
Not God. By nature, God IS glorious. There has never been a moment when his glory dipped—not even for a split second. When we get caught up in being impressed by men and women, we are wasting our adoration. How much better to declare, “From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the Lord is to be praised.” –Psalm 113:3 NIV
David reminds us that each generation commends God’s deeds to the next. When do you stop to tell your children, your grandchildren, even your friends about true greatness and beauty? Who will you tell them about when you do speak? Don’t waste too much time regaling them with stories of mere mortals; tell them of the greatness of God!
