A Heart for God
By: Anna Williams
How committed are we to truly having a heart that seeks God first in all things? We ask for it in our prayers. We sing about it in our Worship songs but how serious are we? What if the journey to a heart that seeks Him includes hard roads of heartbreak and crushing pain?
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those
who are crushed in spirit.
-Psalm 34:18 NIV
The longer I live I am convinced that adversity brings about change faster and more effectively than other methods. The best attitude adjustments I have made were after going through an ordeal. Yet, I confess that I still shy away from turbulent seasons because I have no natural desire to confront another challenge. Left to my own devices, I would prefer the comfort zone.
The verse above is one of my favorite promises from God and has sustained me on dark days. It is a reminder that when our circumstances overwhelm us and our heart and spirit seem all but ended, our Father draws near to us. His work can now be done on the fresh ground that has been cleared of our arrogant and self-serving ideals.
If you find yourself in trouble, take heart because Jesus has overcome the world. The Father has amazing plans to restore you and the Holy Spirit is going to help you each step of the way.
