The Fire Lane
By: Kaleigh Hoschar
Did you know that if you park in a fire lane, you will get towed?
Of course you know that… It's why you may chuckle at my serious mistake, when at the ripe old age of 20, I parked my car in a fire lane in Allentown, PA.
It is easy to laugh at now, but wow. I walked up the steepest hill and saw that I had made a terrible mistake. The car that I had left there an hour ago was gone. I frantically looked around, wondering if I had just returned to the wrong location. Then I saw the firehouse across the road, and the signs indicating that your vehicle was to be towed if you parked HERE. Panic welled up in my heart as I struggled to pull myself from this mess. I remember pleading with God and asking that my car just miraculously manifest in front of me!
To make a long story short, I was able to get the car back from the lot and make the shameful drive back home the next morning.
Is this the most shameful thing I have ever done? Nope.
But I carried it for a while. I let it define the kind of driver I was and how I reacted in certain situations. Until I realized one important thing…
Isaiah 48:10 says, “See, I have refined you, though not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.”
As we walk with God through seasons of affliction or even everyday moments of wrong turns or poor decisions, are we allowing these things to define us or refine us? Your past does not dictate who you are today, but we have a responsibility to ask God over and over again to refine us for the future and betterment of the Kingdom!
So, do you ever think I will park in the fire lane again?
