Trust and Obey
By: Melissa Beauvais
“And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it.” 2 John 1:6
Recently a friend sent my husband a recording of them singing the old hymn ‘Trust and Obey’. Shane then sent it to me. I wept at their voice's beauty and the lyrics' simplicity. Trust and obey.
Obedience comes naturally to me most of the time. I am not the rebel type, and following rules simply felt easier than breaking them. Couple that with the fact that I hate disappointing people or anyone getting mad at me and the obedience thing is one I can often handle.
Trust…well that is a little harder. Trust requires me to humbly admit I am not in control. Trust requires me not to go when I think I ought or stay when I think that is best. Trust disrupts staying comfortable and easy when God asks me to be uncomfortable and step into what I do not know.
Trust and obey.
Do you always feel you trust and obey God in what He asks of you? Sometimes we need John’s reminder that this is love and His love requires us to walk in it; trusting and obeying as we do.
The words to this beautiful hymn are below. I encourage you to sing and remind yourself you have a good God who loves and cares for every moment of your life and every hair on your head. Trust Him. Obey Him.
“When we walk with the Lord
in the light of His word,
what a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will,
He abides with us still,
and with all who will trust and obey.
Trust and obey, for there's no other way
to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.”
