A Lesson from a 3 Year Old
By: Nicole Goddard
“Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”
The expert of the law replied, “the one who had mercy on the him.”
Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.” Luke 10:36-37
Recently, my three year old daughter took it upon herself to reenact the parable of the Good Samaritan. Much to my surprise she dramatically fell to the floor and imitated being close to dead. She explained that two people passed this hurt person, until one person stopped and took care of him. She ended her story with a perturbed look exclaiming, “Mommy, those first two people were too busy to help him!”
Here's where I give a huge shout out to our WILD leaders who clearly touched her with this story! Y’all rock!
The irony of my daughter’s reaction was that she didn’t understand the complexity of the parable, yet FULLY understood Jesus’ point. You see the Priest that passed by was bogged down with his religion – likely scared of being deemed impure for touching the man and being concerned of what others thought. The Levite was likely in a rush to get to his temple duties assigned by his birth in the tribe of Levi. Both were too distracted by the world to provide for an obvious need right in front of them.
But the Good Samaritan saw him. Not of Jewish decent, not a believer - just a good neighbor willing to give his time, energy and money to someone in need. Jesus used this individual to point out God’s exact call for our lives – to love God, and love people.
