Remaining Steadfast in the Small Things
By: Nicole Goddard
Are you like me - confident that you don’t compromise on the big things like professing your faith and teaching your kids how to pray? But maybe you find yourself slipping in the little everyday things? I’m talking about the smaller choices like whether to tithe during a difficult period, or getting caught up in gossip at work.
The book of Daniel kicks off with a story about making one of these small choices similar to the ones you and I face daily. As part of Daniel and his friend’s care and training as a captive servant in the Babylonian palace, they were granted a diet of all the richest foods. Though probably pretty tempting, these foods were not in alignment with Jewish laws.
Daniel made a request to avoid these foods to not defile himself, however the chief eunuch was concerned his physique would decline and catch the King’s attention. Daniel trusted God to maintain and protect their bodies through their dietary change, and guess what?
God made their bodies even stronger and better! He then further rewarded their faithfulness by giving “these four young men knowledge and understanding in every kind of literature and wisdom. Daniel also understood visions and dreams of every kind.” Daniel 1:17 .
Daniel’s steadfast faith in a seemingly small choice granted them the skills they would need to survive the upcoming events and equip them to influence the Babylonian kingdom. May we not underestimate God’s desire for us to remain firm, even in what may feel small or insignificant.
Lord, may we have the confidence of Daniel to glorify you with even the smallest of choices in our everyday lives. Please grant us with the gift of discernment and may our steadfast walk with you lay witness to those around us.
