Don’t be a Barrier
Anna Williams
When I was a child, my parents were attending a small, local country church and were serving in children’s ministry there. They started reaching out to various surrounding neighborhoods inviting kids to attend and the ministry started to grow.
But then a group of the elders came and asked them to start excluding certain families because of the color of their skin. This was obviously non-negotiable for my parents and we found a new home church. The little church soon shrank again to the same 25 people and remained stagnant because of their prejudices.
“As He was approaching Jericho [on His way to Jerusalem], it happened that a blind man was sitting beside the road begging. Now when he heard a crowd going by, he began to ask what this was [about]. They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” So he shouted out, saying, “Jesus, Son of David (Messiah), have mercy on me!” Those who were leading the way were sternly telling him to keep quiet; but he screamed all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”-Luke 18:35-39 AMP
It’s clear from this passage in Luke that the crowd surrounding Jesus was full of fans but not many true followers. Despite this man clearly needing a Healer and regardless of his clear understanding of who Jesus was, these people tried to silence him instead of helping him reach the Savior.
Pray with me: Jesus, please soften my heart towards others and help me to see them as you do. Don’t let me become a barrier but instead a conduit that brings them closer to you. In your name, AMEN.
