When Bad Things Happen to Good People
By: Anna Williams
We all have misplaced beliefs deep inside of us that only become apparent when we suffer. One of the most common misconceptions is that bad things only happen to bad people. This belief is in a way partially true, in that there is a natural law that usually ensures one reaps what one sows.
But what about when you sow goodness and reap tragedy?
“As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him.” – John 9:1-3 ESV
Sometimes we encounter challenges that are not of our own making. We are called to walk through a dark circumstance that feels punishing but is designed to strengthen us and produce good things like perseverance, patience and abiding hope. (Romans 5:3-5) For some, the results are physical healing and for others a spiritual healing.
However, these amazing works of God can only be displayed in us if we remain steadfast in clinging to Him. One of my favorite sayings is: “I trust the next chapter because I know the Author”. I have no idea what difficulties may arise in the coming days, but I know that even the bad things cannot consume me if I remain hidden in Christ.
What challenges are you facing today? Have you talked to your Father about them and asked how you can display more of his works through them?
