It will be my Joy to Say
By: Pastor Adam Munshaw
One of the songs we like to sing around Real Life over the years is “Lay Me Down” by Chris Tomlin and Matt Redman. The line that keeps coming to mind is “It will be my joy to say - Your will, Your way.”
This weekend was a rare one for me. My wife, Abby, went off for the weekend on a girls trip and it was just my two daughters and I around the house. No plans. Nowhere to be. Just a field trip on Friday and the rest was ours.
When Abby is away, I try to be the dad who says “Yes” to whatever the girls want to do (within reason). Let me tell you - letting go of my expectations, calendar, and work just to be present with my girls and play in their world brought me so much joy.
Proverbs 16:1 says, “To humans belong the plans of the heart, but from the Lord comes the proper answer of the tongue.”
Though I might have a lot of plans for my life and my girls’ lives, God knows what we need more than anyone else. I am learning in this season of my life to trust God and His plans far more than my own. When we are living in God’s will for our lives, I can only imagine how it brings Him joy to say “Yes” to what we ask. Here’s the kicker though: We need to do it God’s way.
Proverbs 16:1 teaches us that our hearts and desires often make plans for us, but the Lord gives us the proper answer. More specifically, the Lord directs the tongue for how we should speak and what we should do.
Like the song says, when we do it God’s way - we’ll be in His will. When we’re in His will for our lives, we’ll have joy.
