All I Want is Jesus
By: Allie Hand
Nothing is as wonderful as knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. I have given up everything else and count it all as garbage. All I want is Christ.
Philippians 3:8 (CEV)
The other day my 11 year old son had finished doing his required daily devotional time. Judge me or join me but for anyone in my house I make time with God a required to-do on their list.
Philippians 3:8 became the verse he needed to read, in order to put that check mark down, that he did God time. He went through his God time pretty quickly. Just as quick he rushed out the door to play basketball. Before he could escape, I gently grabbed his arm and asked him what he read today. He broke, immediately, and through his tears I heard, “Every disappointment I have gone through, I haven’t given him the gratitude He deserves. I haven’t relied upon Him. I haven’t trusted Him.”
I read the verse for myself and asked what he meant. He explained that when life didn’t go the way he wanted or he didn’t get what he expected to get, he wasn’t happy, he was disappointed. He was recognizing that his thoughts and desires had been self-centered and that he didn’t have the gratitude for having Christ in his life. All those desires are garbage compared to having and knowing Christ.
There are a lot of things in our lives that aren’t necessarily bad. Comfort, material blessings, serving. All these things are good but they can become a distraction, pull us away from what we know is most important, and that’s knowing Christ Jesus.
We sat there together deciding that all we want is Christ.
