Do You Believe This?
By: Pastor Mark White
Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe,
you will see the glory of God?”
John 11:40
In the Gospel of John, there’s a powerful encounter between Jesus and two grieving sisters.
Jesus had a special relationship with Mary, Martha, and their brother Lazarus. And when Lazarus became sick, they sent word to Jesus, knowing that he had the power to heal. But instead of coming right away, Jesus deliberately delayed coming to Lazarus, allowing him to die. But why? I admit that this is perplexing at first, but Jesus used this as an opportunity to reveal to us something greater.
Jesus was going to display the glory of God in a greater way. So as He approached the tomb where Lazarus was lying, He declared, "Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?" (John 11:40). Then Jesus asked a question that He is still asking today:
"Do you believe this?"
Throughout Jesus’s ministry, He gives us glimpses of what life will be like in the Kingdom of God. The healing of the sick, the restoration of broken lives, and even the raising of the dead are all signs pointing to the ultimate fulfillment of God's promises. In His interactions with Mary and Martha, Jesus brings healing and restoration in the middle of their grief. He demonstrates that in the Kingdom, pain and sorrow will be replaced by wholeness and joy.
As we reflect on Jesus's ministry of sowing seeds of the Kingdom – it has a way of making us homesick for a country that we haven’t been to yet. It gives us a confidence that God's Kingdom is coming, where the light of the King pushes out the darkness, selfishness will transform into generosity, brokenness will be healed, and grief will be replaced with restoration. Jesus's life serves as a preview, a foretaste of what is to come.
Today, let us answer Jesus' question with a resounding, "Yes, I believe!"
Let us live in anticipation of the day when we will fully experience the fulfillment of Jesus's words: "If you believe, you will see the glory of God."
