Wait on God
By: Melissa Beauvais
“Even youths shall faint and be weary,
and young men shall fall exhausted;
but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
they shall walk and not faint.” Isaiah 40:30-31
Often this chapter is referred to as the “comfort chapter” in Isaiah. Israel has abandoned Yahweh but Yahweh has not abandoned her. Isaiah delivers this message as a reminder that God is still near and He is an all-powerful and all Creator God.
“Even youths faint and grow weary,” he says. The young, strong, and energetic can grow tired and feel exhausted. Are you tired and exhausted? Do you feel that all you have been doing is running on fumes for one week, hoping that next week will be better? I know this feeling. I know when you feel like the hamster on the wheel that keeps going and going in circles but not going anywhere days and weeks can feel. I also know when I get in those seasons and how it affects me. Emotionally, physically, and spiritually. I am irritable, exhausted, tired, and doubtful.
Then the “but” this small little word with huge implications provides for us another way “But they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength”. Wait?! You have to wait to renew, wait to ride, wait to fly, that is what Isaiah is saying. What happens when you wait is renewed strength.
“Renew” comes from the Hebrew word ḥālap, which means “to put on afresh.” Literally speaking the phrase would read “to put on fresh strength”. This strength is not human strength for that leads to exhaustion. This strength is divine. It is transformational. It is the strength that you no longer depend on me but depend on Thee. This renewed divine strength only given by God gives clarity to see like an eagle from the bird’s eye view and the endurance to finish the race.
In your weakness, you can be made strong if you wait on God. Lean into His presence and let Him provide renewal.
