Transcending Boundaries
By: Pastor Mark White
A Canaanite woman from that
vicinity came to him, crying out,
“Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! ...”
Matthew 15:21-28 (NIV)
A Canaanite woman approaches Jesus, desperately seeking help for her demon-possessed daughter. At first, we see Jesus remaining silent, but His disciples are very vocal - urging Him to send her away. But this Canaanite woman’s faith remains unshaken. She is persistent. She kneels before Jesus and pleads for His help. Even when Jesus mentions that He was sent to the lost sheep of Israel, she responds humbly, saying that even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master's table. And Jesus is astonished by her unwavering faith and heals her daughter instantly.
The Canaanite woman's faith overcame cultural boundaries and the initial rejection. Her persistence and her trust in Jesus show us that our faith should not waver, even when it seems that God is silent or if we are facing difficult challenges. Just like the Canaanite women, we must approach Jesus with this kind of unwavering faith, knowing that He is compassionate and willing to respond to our cries.
But even more than that, this woman’s encounter reminds us that God's love transcends our human divisions. Although Jesus was initially focused on the lost sheep of Israel, He recognized the Canaanite woman's faith and answered her by healing her daughter. This reveals the inclusive nature of God's kingdom, where no one is excluded based on their ethnicity, background, or social status. As followers of Christ, we are called to emulate this kind of love, rejecting discrimination and showing compassion to all people.
In just a few verses, this Canaanite woman teaches us about persevering in prayer, trusting in Jesus' compassion, and embracing His love that transcends all boundaries.
