Resentment Is Murder?
By: Allison Hand
“So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.” Matthew 5:23-24
These are the red letter words in your Bible, Jesus’ words! And He talks about this in the same topic as not committing murder!
That’s right, MURDER, one of the ten commandments!
How can having an offense with someone I know be related to murder?
Jesus fulfilled the law by living the life demanded by Moses, which means He followed all of God’s laws perfectly. Something no one is able to do other than Jesus.
But we too can share in that perfection.
He replaced our sinful nature with Christ’s perfect nature in form of the Holy Spirit. And he calls us to a certain way of life as citizens of His Kingdom.
Now back to the murder, I mean resentment against another.
Here He says it’s not about following rules because I am pretty sure we have all got the ‘not murdering thing down.’
It’s about your heart.
“Where is your heart?” Jesus asks.
If there is anger, resentment, bitterness, jealousy or frustration between you and another person, Jesus says we should immediately seek restoration, no matter whose fault it is.
I would say that’s harder than not murdering someone!
But will lead to only good.
Let’s have a heart check today and decide whose way we are following–Jesus’s way or our way. And then first go and reconcile whoever God’s placed on your heart.
