From Sacrifice to Privilege

From Sacrifice To Privilege
By Lori Ennis

And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.” Hebrews 10:24-25
You’ve likely heard that church attendance isn’t really necessary to be a Christian, and just going to church isn’t going to get you into Heaven.

In fact, that seems to be the trend today…the belief that one can have the relationship with Christ that the early church had, but without any of the sacrifices and commitments that the early church made in their following of their Messiah.
No, I guess you don’t have to go to church to be a Christian, but boy…if you’re a Christian, I cannot for the life of me see why you wouldn’t want to go to church!
When our son died 12 years ago, it was solely the Holy Spirit working through our church–His Holy Body–that sustained us. The meals, prayers, cards, encouragement and service in the toughest time of our lives still brings me to tears as I think about the sacrifices made and the love poured out.

Because that’s the thing about church. When you love Jesus, you love His people. And that means that there’s no better thing you’d rather be doing than meeting with and fellowshipping with and serving His people. Learning about how to grow in your relationship with Him and being the light on the hill and the salt of the earth. Or at least there should be no better thing.

Sure, church attendance requires sacrifice. Early mornings, long days serving and missing out on things the world plans as “Sunday Funday” is all the rage.

But when you belong to a family of faith who loves you and cares for you as Jesus would…when realize how many people in the world would be killed just for the thought of gathering together and you have the opportunity to do it every.single.week (or more!)--the sacrifice turns to privilege.
If you’ve been holding back from gathering (or gathering again)…or been hurt by ‘church’ and have sworn them all off, consider giving the church another try.
Where His people gather in His name and work together to stir up love and good works can only be a balm for your soul.
And, if you’re a regular church attender but have been feeling a bit overwhelmed or burned out, remember the privilege we have in gathering and loving and serving our Savior. What a privilege it is!
