After God’s Own Heart
When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers— the moon and the stars you set in place— what are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them? Psalm 8:3-4 NLT
The Lord is righteous in all his ways and faithful in all he does. The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them. Psalm 145:17-19 NIV
David is referred to twice in the Bible as being a man after God’s own heart. (1 Sam. 13:14, Ac. 13:22) If you have not studied the life of David, I would certainly encourage you to do so. He is a prime example of a flawed human being who nevertheless chased after God with a passion. In my own readings through the years – especially in the book of Psalms – it became clear that David had an open line of communication with the Lord. He was a man of prayer.
So many of the Psalms are written about the Greatness of God. Even the passages that are written during the darkest moments of David’s life extoll the majesty and beauty of God. In the passage above from Psalm 8, David marvels at how small and insignificant we are and yet the Lord cares for us. Furthermore, not only does He care, but He draws near to us when we call on Him with honest hearts.
There is no secret recipe for a successful prayer to God. You don’t need a special rug, ancient ritual or jewelry to gain His attention. You don’t have to seek out a human intermediary or the right building before you can talk to Him. All you need is a relationship. Whether it’s been going on for years or you just started it yesterday – that relationship makes it possible for mere mortals like you and me to access the Creator and Most High God by just speaking to Him. When we grasp this concept, we naturally hunger for His presence and we want to talk to Him about every area of our lives.
