Love Goes the Distance - Day 37 – Monday, March 29th – Pastor Chris Whetlor
Read Mark 14:12-21 and focus on 14:16-21 below
Remember to Pause | Read | Reflect | Listen |Pray | Journal |Practice | Encourage/Share |Fast
The two disciples went into the city and found everything just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover meal. While Jesus and the twelve disciples were eating together that evening, he said, “The one who will betray me is now eating with me.”
This made the disciples sad, and one after another they said to Jesus, “You surely don’t mean me!” He answered, “It is one of you twelve men who is eating from this dish with me. The Son of Man will die, just as the Scriptures say. But it is going to be terrible for the one who betrays me. That man would be better off if he had never been born.”
Unless you have lived under a rock like Patrick from Sponge Bob, or have never heard the story of the Last Supper, then you can be forgiven for never knowing who Jesus was talking about in this passage from Mark. However, for the rest of the 99.9% of the population, Judas's name is who Jesus is speaking off. Judas forever etched into the minds of many as the betrayer of Jesus, the one who sold Jesus out for 30 pieces of silver. The name Judas is ranked right there next to Adolf as names that spark an adverse reaction.
Judas sold out the name of Jesus, portrayed even more powerfully in the kiss of the betrayer on the Mount of Olives before the arrest of Jesus. Jesus refers to the other disciples as “beloved,” “friends,” “disciples,” but to Judas, the name betrayer will forever be etched in eternity. By what name do you want Jesus to call you, beloved, good, faithful servant, disciple, or friend. What I can guarantee is no-one wants to be called a betrayer. During this Holy Week, commit to living for Jesus in faith and action so that in eternity your name will be spoken as beloved, servant, friend, and disciple, and never as the betrayer.
Prayer Focus – Today, pray for boldness and courage to invite someone from your Oikos (your world) to services this weekend. Pray also for others who are thinking of asking their non-Christian friends, family, co-workers, or neighbors to an Easter Sunday worship service.
