And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’” And he said to him, “Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth.” And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.
And Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!” And the disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how difficult it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” (ESV)

This passage is a well-known story of the rich man who followed all the law, thinking that was what needed to be done to go to Heaven. When He asked Jesus for confirmation, He was grieved to learn that He had to give up all His worldly possessions to follow Him. For the rich man, the creature comfort cost was too much, and he walked away from the joy found solely in Jesus.

This passage does not intend to shame anyone for having a satisfying life with nice things; in fact, Mark purposed to point out that “Jesus loved” the rich man. He wasn’t asking him to give up worldly riches for Jesus’s sake—but for the rich man’s own sake. To be willing to lay it all down before your King and follow Him is what Jesus is looking for in our hearts because Jesus knows that it’s in Him and only Him can we fully find fulfillment. He may never ask us to give every worldly possession we have, but if we want the life Jesus has purposed for us, we need to be willing to go all-in with Him.  When HE is our heart’s desire, we are truly rich.

Prayer Focus - Today, we will pray for the homeless in our community who desperately need us to walk alongside them and give them hope for the future.
