Killing Me Softly Devotional Series – Week 2 – Procrastination - Monday – Pastor Chris
Unworthy Procrastination

Scripture Reading — James 4:17 (ESV)
“So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.”

We all know that it’s essential to spend time in God’s Word. We probably even want to spend time reading His Word, listening to Him speak truth into our lives, and enjoying a loving relationship with Him. Why then don’t we do it as often as we should? The simple answer is procrastination.

Charles Dickens wrote, “My advice is never to do tomorrow what you can do today. Procrastination is the thief of time.” Procrastination is a terrible thief, yet it’s a thief we allow to exist time and time again. If it weren’t for the last minute, you wouldn’t get anything done, is the frustrated cry from non-procrastinators to the serial procrastinator.

The worst thing about procrastination is that we often have convincing reasons for why today is not good. Think of the time you went to bed with a resolve to wake up early to read your Bible, but then you kept hitting the snooze button. Maybe with meaningful intent, you opened your Bible app on your mobile phone only to be distracted by Facebook, Instagram, or Tik-Tok.
Procrastination in reading our Bible can have many roots. Maybe it’s a lack of structure, timing, feeling overwhelmed by life, anxiety, emotions, or simply a complete lack of interest. Go ahead, you pick your reason and plug it into this devotion today.

However, for me, one of the deadliest reasons not to spend time in God’s word is sin. Not that it’s a mortal sin not to read your Bible, but that sin makes us feel unclean in God’s presence. Therefore, we procrastinate reading and spending time in God’s word because we either feel unworthy or fear that the word of God will expose our sinful hearts.

The sad part of that experience is that if we read our Bible, we will find God’s redemption, salvation, and love encapsulated in Jesus Christ. Faith in Christ makes us worthy before God, gives us the courage to face our sinful desires and the tools to become conquerors of our sin.
When we don’t procrastinate reading our Bibles, commit to a relationship with Christ, live in faith with Christ, and let the Holy Spirit speak to us through the word and prayer, then we can do what we ought to do and live in God’s will for our lives.
