Do You See It?
By: Pastor Melissa
“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” John 1:14a
In early Christian practice, the start of Christmas began on December 25th. The Twelve Days after Christmas would be filled with feasts and celebration and culminating on January 6th with the Feast of Epiphany. A day which the Church would celebrate Christ’s manifestation to the nations. Epiphany tends to be a lost tradition in modern-day Western culture, but its meaning and purpose is one we can reflect on and live out.
Epiphany sends us out to live the mystery and enlightenment we have witnessed through the Incarnation of Jesus Christ to the world around us. Redeemed by His blood, sent and purposed, we are told to “go” (Matthew 28:18). In this strange and dark world, we get to share the flipped truth Jesus brought when He dwelt among us. His ways were upside down to the Roman rule and what became Jewish law. They challenged the status quo, gave justice to oppressed, touched the untouchables, welcomed a sinner, and ate with the poor. The hierarchy political system was questioned and confronted when Jesus entered the scene. And He taught to live these same topsy-turvy truths to the world around His disciples upon His departure and to our world around us.
We get to be a witness to the love we have experienced through Jesus and powered by His Spirit. Heaven meets earth daily by people who are united by the Spirit of God. Reflections of the truth of what is to come can be seen and felt. Do you see it? “We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14b).
