More Dependable Than The Rising Sun
By: Anna Williams
On the night of Jesus' birth, radiant light suddenly burst forth amidst the darkness above the shepherd’s fields. Little did anyone know that centuries of waiting by God’s chosen people had come to an end – their Savior had arrived.
I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits,
and in his word I put my hope.
I wait for the Lord
more than watchmen wait for the morning,
more than watchmen wait for the morning.
– Psalm 130:5-6 NIV
Do you find yourself in a dark night of the soul – desperately waiting for rescue? Maybe you’re waiting for God to answer a prayer that you continually bring before him.
I love the imagery shared in this Psalm and the emphasis placed by repeating the last line. Night watchmen have a tough job. They must be alert when others are resting, and they must learn to heighten their other senses because their sight is limited. One would imagine they await the morning with anticipation. But not just anticipation – they await it with certainty.
The watchmen trust that the darkness is only temporary and do not doubt that within a matter of hours, the sun will rise. Is your hope in the sunrise stronger than your hope in its Creator?
Our Heavenly Father is trustworthy, loving and desires good for our lives. If we have a need, we ask him to help us. We read his Word to remind us of how he helped other believers and to encourage us to remain steadfast in our hope.
We stay alert to guard ourselves against the temptation to act ahead of him. We wait for his solution on his timeline. We wait with certainty.
